The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present the sabbaticalexhibition, Psyche by art faculty, JSBird.
JS Bird is a painting instructor forthe Department of Art and Applied Design at Lane Community College. Following arecent sabbatical, JS has been producing a new body of work exploring the mythof Psyche and Eros…using “iconographicfemale images of Pop culture to cast in the role of Psyche, famous women whoare culturally associated with beauty and sexuality. While these icons are associated withsexuality and fantasy, there actually is no relationship between the icon andthe viewer, except what lives inside the viewers head.”
In discussinghis art as it relates to his audience, JS states, ”In most cases art is neutral, it is anobject, (objectified) yet the viewer creates a relationship with the art onlyby looking at it. While adopting popculture’s pictorial conventions of sexuality, I am relying on context totransform the images into a form that transcends the very conventionsutilized. Such an overt, embellishedfantasy, perhaps, holds within it, the capacity to force the viewer to confront, rather than indulge in, ones desire, or rejection, of the image.”
The show runs from November13th through December 6th. A sabbatical talk and closingreception will take place on Thursday, November 29th, beginning at 4:00pm with a reception immediately following at 5:00. The lecture and receptionare free and open to the public. The gallery is located in building 11 on the maincampus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. There is no charge for admission. The Art andApplied Design Department phone number is 541-463-5409.
